I am not a Hunting expert by any shape of the imagination. I did work PEDS and PICU in rural New England, and I also have worked inner city ER"S, so that is my experience for Hunting and Gunshot wounds.But even with my limited experience I have some questions that keep banging around my head about the Hunting Incident.
(1) Wittington has not been seen since the incident- by Anyone? No interviews given? His wife ? No photos? ( You would think that by now the White House would have found a way for some folksy warm and cozy kiss ass photo to be "produced"? )
(2) He was out in the field with Cheney's Excellent Trauma ( cough) trained team for atleast 50 minutes before they decided to transfer him by ambo- nor air medivac ? A Crack team decided that a 78 year old man didn't need trauma care ???- he was shot in face, neck, and head, and chest. ( and wasn't talking"not responsive" we now have learned from Cheney). We later learned that he did indeed have pellets in his neck and larynx. ( Did any vessels become nicked or damaged during the neck damage? His neck- throat thyroid, his AIRWAY....? )
(3) Has anyone else wondered if he had a heart attack? I mean he is 78 years old and was shot in the face and chest....Did they have to do a little CPR out there in the field?
(4) Why was he driven to the FURTHER little rinky dink hospital and not taken BY AIR to the NEAREST TRAUMA CENTER? Is it because Witty has crappy insurance?
(5)How much liquor was consumed ? Were blood alcohol levels done on Witty ?Or on Cheny at any point in the first 12 hours?
Does Cheney's Heart meds conflict or interact with alcohol?
(6)Were any of the evidence saved from the scene- the clothes, the weapons?
(7) Has anyone looked at the Hunting Reports from the previous year, how many people were shot in the chest, and head while shooting quail during hunting incidents ? ( see link below)...answer.....???
(8 )Smoking Gun has report and some witnesses listed. The best part is where they say in ironic semantic fashion that Whittington "COLLABORATES" Dick's story. ( Which considering he isn't talking due to laryngeal damage- that is just about miraculous)
(9) So the Pellets penetrated his clothes, and vest. The 30 yards theory is not holding up to that one.( Armstrong said this)
Pellets no only penetrated the clothes they penetrated his skin and oragans and tissue- heart, liver and larynx. ( I am estimating 30-60 feet, but this means visibility would not have and should not have been impaired)
(10) Silence is deafening on this, no Interviews with Family ? Lynne Stand By Her Man Cheney ? THE WIFE ?....
(11) Cheney susposedly did not talk to Bush Until WHEN???? Sunday night? Monday ? when?
The VP of our Country shot an OLD MAN in the Face, Head, Neck and Chest and here it is Thursday Feb 16th, and he is still in ICU and susposedly had a heart attack and suffered a pellet in his heart, liver and larynx. He also may have up to 200 pellets in his body, and if there are lead based that is quite a bit of lead.
And VP didn't give a press conference until WED to Fox....the shooting was on SATURDAY ????
Those are some of my nursey questions....I don't know enough about hunting....maybe this is a new Fair Game.

And since Cheney usually travels with Blackhawk helicopters trained for med evac in case he has another "big one" while out hunting in remote areas as he is prone to do, why weren't they employed for this medical emergency which was caused by Cheney afterall? Oh, they are only for Cheney's use ... well, why didn't he just accompany his friend in the helicopter to the nearest trauma center? If you had just accidentally shot your friend, wouldn't you go with him? Wouldn't you feel so awful about this tragedy, that you would want to be there with him just to reassure him everything was being done? Something reeks here like animal house after an all night toga party. D.K.

I still like this story of 'a pellet travelling to the heart'...like it happened after the fact. I think the pellet travelled from Unca Dick's shotgun into the man's heart. I mean, why be COY?

Well, I've got ALL the goods on my blog....including links to some very interesting and perhaps unintentionally funny tests.
This stuff is not that hard to figure out if you are familiar with shotgun ballistics.
Also just found out that the doctors said the pellet found in Whittington's liver was significantly larger than the rest.
No surprise to those familiar with shotgun ballistics. Pellets often clump and adhere to each other during the manufacturing process.
These larger chunks of lead have significantly greater penetrating power.
Perhaps that will ease some of the concerns from our nurse.
Correction, the reference I have refers to the heart, not the liver....although it seems in my travels I have also seen reference to a larger pellet in the liver.
At any rate, there is now yet another explanation for the two instances of deeper penetration.
Thanks for the Ballistics of the situation, which I think will be studied by many for many monthes....I am not sure if the weight of the pellet would be related to it's ability to penetrate tissue and organs, but I need to learn more about ballistics....but I do think distance is also a factor , as in clothing choices. Firedoglake has/had alot of really signifigant data coming up- mostly in the comments on CSI of the situation. Sadly alot of the pertinent facts have not been revealed so we may never know the truth. I just hope for Whitty's sake that he has good trauma doctors following him as well as Environmental doc's monitor his lead blood levels.
well. i can say from experience that a bullet from a .22 rifle will go through a 1/2" piece of plywood at 25 yards, so it's not hard to imagine that a shotgun blast from "deadeye dick" would do serious damage at 30 yards or more...and 90 feet isn't too much of a distance to know what you're shooting at...first rule of hunting, that one...also sounds like deadeye could use a course in handling firearms, it sounds like he didn't have the choke set properly for the situation on that shotgun, so it sent the shot out in a wide pattern...which is silly if you're hunting a small bird like a quail, you'll either be picking the lead out of the carcass, or you'll blow the bird into little pieces...and the latter violates the basic ethic of hunting...he seems like a trigger-happy hunter and i think he'd be better off shooting tin cans for the target practice...
Shooting gamebirds with several hunters is different. You respond very quickly, you follow the bird, swing through the bird to get the gun out in front of it and then slap the trigger.
It's very quick and you are focused completely on the bird and the end of your gun barrel.
That's why everybody has to know exactly where everybody else is at all times.
Whittington popped up out of a gully without informing the others that he was back....bad timing because the quail came by just then and he took some pellets.
Hunting is dangerous. Real guns are used. Everybody has to cooperate with the safety rules or bad things happen.
I appreciate certain folks trying to teach me about ballistics- even though I certainly know the end results...and have taken care of the wounds....
Here is a whole NEW way to look at this...suspose the VEEP had gone hunting with Scalia and had a few beers at lunch and then accidentally blasted him in the chest and neck....
and then not said anything for days...Would that be okay too???
